Brig-Simplon Region
The special atmosphere of Brig, with its Mediterranean charm and Alpine down-to-earthness, is rooted in the geographical location of the town of Brig. Situated in the heart of the Alps, the mighty Aletsch Glacier towers to the north, enthroned in the Rhone Valley, while the historic Simplon Pass lies to the south on the threshold to Italy.
On Alten Simplonstrasse, only 100 metres from the hotel, rises Stockalper Palace. Built by Kaspar Stockalper vom Thurm (1609–1691), it is the largest private building of Baroque Switzerland. The three-towered palace is the symbol of the town of Brig.
These loyal Swiss men have served the Pope for over 500 years. To symbolically protect the Pope, but also as a rewarding addition to tourists' souvenir photos, there are still strapping, smartly uniformed Swiss Guards in front of St Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Every Saturday morning, a small market takes place on Sebastiansplatz in the centre of Brig, where producers from the region sell fresh vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy products.
In 2012, a permanent exhibition entitled "Passage Simplon" opened on the ground floor of Stockalper Palace on an area of 200 m2. It sheds light on the historical relationship between Brig and Simplon, whose chequered histories are closely linked.
Bike
